2-day Masterclass in Commedia dell’Arte (9am to 5pm each day)
Led by Dr Corinna Di Niro – Australia’s leading expert in Commedia dell’Arte. This masterclass follows Dr Di Niro’s methodology for teaching and performing Commedia dell’Arte with relevance in contemporary times. Participants will dive deep into the world of Commedia dell’Arte, learn how and why the early players became so successful and will adopt these techniques to create new Commedia performances that are relevant to new audiences. Through a practical and hands on approach, participants will develop their skills in devising physical theatre as they explore characterization, body and voice in dynamic ways. This masterclass covers archetypes, postures, gestures, mask, movement, audience interaction, slapstick, stage combat and lazzi. Please note: This is a physically demanding masterclass. Participants should be in good health and be prepared to ‘work’ for the whole duration.

The Teacher
Corinna Di Niro
Dr Corinna Di Niro is an international performer, director, teacher, author and researcher of Commedia dell’Arte. She is considered Australia’s leading expert in Commedia. Corinna trained in Commedia in Italy in 2004 and holds a PhD in Commedia for a contemporary Australian context. She has published widely in the field and is an invited lecturer at NIDA. Corinna is interested in making Commedia accessible to new and diverse audiences where Commedia is not part of the day-to-day culture. Her vision is for Commedia to return to its seminal position as the key training tool for performance studies in tertiary institutions across Australia.
